Dermatologists Share Skincare Secrets

Doctors Say It's Important To Protect Skin From Sun

Healthy-looking skin is something every woman wants. But where do you start?

The long aisles of beauty products and the long list of promises to make you look younger can be intimidating, confusing and costly. KMBC's Kelly Eckerman talked with local dermatologists about what they use on their skin.

Dr. Meggan Newland at St. Luke's Hospital said she washes her face with Aquaglycolic. She said it gently cleans and exfoliates."It does so without really drying you out," Newland said. "Glycolic acid and alpha hydroxy acid can also help with texture, so you kind of kill two birds with one stone that way."

Newland said it can be ordered from a pharmacist.

To moisture in the morning, Newland said she uses Neutrogena with helioplex.

"You need something that covers UVA and helioplex is a good UVA blocker. So that's why I use it. It's a good moisturizer for me. It's over-the-counter, easy to find and not too expensive, and it has good, broad coverage," Newland said.

At night, Newland said she moisturizes with Cetaphil, which is also sold over the counter. She then uses five drops of Retin A for fine lines and wrinkles. Retin A requires a doctor's prescription.

"You don't notice a difference tomorrow. But if you do it for two years and go off it, you'll think, 'Where the heck is my Retin A?'" Newland said.

Dr. Deborah Ohlhausen from Midwest Medical Specialists said she uses CeraVe cleanser, which is available at most discount stores.

"It's very gentle. It actually hydrates the skin while you wash it. But it's strong enough to remove makeup," Ohlhausen said.

To moisturize, Ohlhausen said she uses Oil of Olay with sunscreen. At night, she uses two items by Skin Ceuticals -- Renew Overnight Dry and the A.G.E. Eye Complex, which is available from doctors or spas."

This has extra ingredients that helps with puffy eyes and dark circles. I've really seen a difference since I've used it," Ohlhausen said.

Both dermatologists said the key to anti-aging is sunscreen.

"If I could get everybody into an SPF every day, I'd be a happy dermatologist, and I think we would all age much more gracefully," Ohlhausen said.
