How are the tattoos removed?

The PicoSure laser uses an intense beam of light that is attracted to the pigment in the ink, creating a photothermal action and shattering the ink, breaking it down into smaller particles allowing the body to eliminate the ink through its own natural processes.  This type of energy allows better clearance with fewer treatments necessary and without injury to the surrounding skin.  Even dark, stubborn blue and green inks, as well as previously treated, recalcitrant tattoos can be removed.

Is the process painful?

The removal process can be uncomfortable.  For many patients, the feeling of the laser tattoo removal has been compared to what it feels like when getting a tattoo, however the treatment is very fast.  The treatment area can be numbed prior to your appointment with ice and a topical anesthetic can also be used to help reduce any pain.

How many treatment sessions will it take?

The number of PicoSure laser treatment sessions needed for tattoo removal is dependent on several factors such as type of ink used in the tattoo, how deep the ink is, the age of the tattoo, the size of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo, etc.  Every tattoo and every person is different.  PicoSure technology allows removal in less treatments, about half of other lasers.  At your consultation, your tattoo and skin type will be evaluated and we will recommend a realistic treatment plan to help you acheive the results you desire.

Do all colors of ink fade?

Yes, all colors of ink can be treated with the PicoSure laser.  Some will fade and break down faster than others but with repeat treatments all colors can be treated.

How much will PicoSure tattoo removal cost?

The cost of tattoo removal depends on several factors including the size and intricacy of the tattoo.  Pricing estimates will be given at your FREE consultation.  You may choose to pay for your removal with single treatment payments or by purchasing a discounted package.

Can I lighten a tattoo for coverup work or have just part of one removed?

Yes.  With the PicoSure technology we can pinpoint exactly what part of the tattoo you want removed or lightened and treat only that area. If you would like only a color removed from a tattoo we can remove the color within the tattoo but leave the outline.  If you are wanting to have coverup work done and need to have your tattoo lightened to make the coverup easier, we can also assist you by not doing a complete removal but working with your tattoo artist to lighten or remove areas needed for your new work.

What is the difference between PicoSure and other tattoo removal lasers such as the Q-switch?

Traditional nanosecond lasers predominately rely on photothermal action, delivering heat to the pigment and surrounding tissue.  PicoSure takes advantage of PressureWave technology to shatter the target ink instead of relying on heat, allowing the body to easily eliminate particles.  This allows the ink to break up faster and allows fewer treatments.  The short pulses of the PicoSure are safer for the surrounding tissue and cause less pain.

Will my tattoo completely disappear?

In most cases, yes.  However, it is important to remember that there are over 250 inks used in tattoos worldwide today, none of which are registered by the FDA.  Not knowing anything about the ink, how much was used, how deep it went, etc. makes it difficult to predict the degree of removal for any tattoo.

How often will I need treatment?

It typically takes 4-8 weeks for the body to break down and absorb the ink particles.  Every patient and tattoo respond differently. Following the post treatment protocol will improve the results and help reduce the chance of adverse events.

What do I do to prepare for my treatment?

Be sure that the area is free of all hair.  You may take an oral pain reliever 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to your appointment. Icing the treament area for 30-60 minutes prior to your appointment will assist in numbing the area.

How will my skin look after the laser treatment?

The area will have an immediate slight whitening or "frosting" of the skin, however this will subside immediately after the treatment is complete.  You may experience some redness and swelling with possible blisters.

What type of post treatment care is necessary?

You will be sent home with a post care take-home kit to use for the next 5-10 days.  You may feel like you have a mild sunburn in the area and in some cases minimal blistering can be expected.  Your provider will assist you with any concerns you have and as always please call our office with any questions.
